I got an invite Google Wave last month, but I can't get it to work. It takes me to a page that tells me to log into my Google Wave account, and when I try to log in it just tells me Google Wave is not activated for my account. I had it sent to my non-GMail address, I don't know if that matters.

I've tried this logged out, then logged in, different addresses, different browsers, nothing works. Same thing each time.

Any ideas?

Here's a glimpse into my mind as a writer...

Would a werewolf couple celebrate their silver anniversary?

If a werewolf is "mooned," does he shift?

It's stuff like this that keeps me up at night.

The Remembrance Day Ceremony for Montreal was held on our campus due to renovations at its normal venue. They had four cannons do the 21-gun salute to signal the beginning and the end of two minutes of silence; those were easily heard from my office. They were late, though--I'd already done my personal minute of silence at 11am.

I just got confirmed to take part in a fibromyalgia study being done by a McGill doctor. An excerpt from her website talks about her previous research:

Dr. M. Catherine Bushnell, Canada Research Chair in Clinical Pain Research, is addressing these far-reaching effects of chronic pain in her work. She has shown that grey matter in the brains of patients with fibromyalgia (an incurable condition of chronic muscle and connective tissue pain) decreases more rapidly with age than does that of healthy individuals.

It does? That doesn't sound good. :(

Here's what the study I'm in is about:

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of fibromyalgia on the brain, on how people feel pain, and on how they think and remember. We expect that the results of this study may improve our understanding of fibromyalgia and related chronic pain conditions. The results in the patients will be compared to those in healthy control subjects, which is why you are invited to take part in the study.

Your participation in the study will involve a telephone interview of around 15 minutes, two visits to the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain that will both last for 1.5-2 hours and one 1-1.5 hour brain imaging session at the Montreal Neurological Institute.

I'm a bit nervous because one of the sessions will involve "apply[ing] non-painful and painful warm, cold and pressure stimuli to your hand, arm, or leg" until my tolerance level is reached. A "nail bed" is mentioned (WTF O_O). However, in the end I will get $200, a free MRI (I hope they let me see the result! I want a picture of my brain ^_^;), and the satisfaction of having participated in something that may help me down the line.

In fact, during my pre-screening, I was told how progress has been made in fibromyalgia research (to the point where they have decided that it shouldn't even be called fibromyalgia because it has nothing to do with the fibrous things and pretty well everything to do with the brain, so they are unofficially calling it "acute all-over pain" or something like that) and the doctor gave me the names of a couple of pain-managing drugs to ask my real doctor about. So I should really call my doctor (haven't seen him in like 3 years).

I almost forgot to mention that, like the first book, this sequel also contains three (yes, THREE) short stories set in the same universe. In addition to the full novel, "The Mark of Cain," you also get "Stray," "Shifting Perspective," and "Catch of the Day" as bonus stories! Woo-hoo!

I admit freely that, while I'm not particularly a fan of sparkly vampires,  I am a tried and true member of Camp Jacob. I adore Taylor Lautner (and yes, it makes me feel a bit like a pedophile, since he's barely out of diapers), because...wow. That young man is some serious hotness right there. He's the only reason I'm planning to go to see New Moon when it releases. Shirtless shapeshifter? Oh, hell yes!

EXCERPT #1 - In Their Own Skins II: Mark of Cain by Kiernan Kelly, WS

Nov. 11th, 2009 | 01:41 pm
posted by: [info]kiernankelly in [info]torquere_social

Here's the first excerpt of the day, a work-safe snippet from my newest release, Mark of Cain.

Blurb:

Almost twenty years have passed since Cain, the formidable T-Rex shifter, and his Ultimate Predators attacked the Shifting Sands Ranch. Jax, Dakota, and the rest of the Pack have matured and prospered. A new generation of shifters have come into their own at the Ranch, not least of which are twins Tai and Mal, who give their uncles no end of sass, just like teenagers should. Life is good, but the peace they’ve enjoyed is about to be splintered.

Cain left behind more than just his mark on the lives of the folks at the Shifting Sands Ranch, and his twin legacies are vengeful, lethal, hungry, and headed for the Ranch, intent on finishing what Cain began.

What happens when the next generation of shifters collide just like their parents' did? Who will survive? Who will come out on top?

Find out in this exciting sequel to In Their Own Skins: Shifting Sands.

Good morning (well, it's morning for me, anyway)!  I'm as excited as a kid on Christmas morning because I've got a brand new book out today! It's the sequel to In Their Own Skins: Shifting Sands, and is called The Mark of Cain. It picks up twenty years after the first book ends, with a whole new generation of shfters, new threats, and new loves.

And hot m/m sex. Did I mention the sex?

I'll post an excerpt a little later on today, and hold a contest to win a Torquere gift certificate, and other random silliness.

First, here's a question: If you could be a shapeshifter, what animal would you be, and why?

Writerly Wednesday - Do It Right

Nov. 11th, 2009 | 09:19 am
posted by: [info]lauren_dane

No matter where you are in your writing career there’s pressure. First you have pressure to complete the book. Pressure to sell it. Pressure to market it. Pressure to do well. Pressure to follow up with another winner. Pressure to make that sell and market, etc. If you get rejected there’s pressure to follow up with something else – what to write, where to send it – it goes on and on. Agents, editors, covers, marketing, should you do conferences, should you rush out to write something when you see a call, do you want to branch out, what happens if you take some time off, will readers forget about you – blah blah blah

Carina Press announced its opening this week. This directly from their website:

Carina Press is a new digital-only publisher that combines editorial and marketing expertise with the freedom of digital publishing. With a long history of digital marketing and editorial experience, the Carina Press team is committed to bringing readers fresh voices and new, unique editorial.

So of course people, writers, have been discussing the pros and cons all over the place. Sharing thoughts and concerns. Loops and boards can be pretty helpful this way, though they can also be peppered with things I personally get annoyed about – the willfully blind, the chip on the shoulder, the spurned ex whatever.

One thing I saw a few people bring up, the thing that bugged me most was the suggestion that authors should just you know, “look for whatever crap they got rejected on with other epublishers and send that in”

Authors should always strive to submit their best work. You’re really going to knock on the door of a new line at the largest romance publisher with crap that got rejected from poodlebutt press? Don’t you think you’re selling yourself short? Don’t you think you’re selling the publisher you’re submitting to short?

We all have books that have been rejected for reasons other than quality. Marketing looked at it and was like, “what the heck are we supposed to do with this?” for instance. Now, see, THAT might be a manuscript to take a chance on subbing because it’s not that hamster, cow, pig menage shifter no one wanted – in fact the example I gave is precisely why digital publishing is attractive to me. They can take chances because the structure of a digital press is such that they can take chances on things traditional publishing may not be able to.

Not every book an author writes will be the very best book they ever wrote. It’s not possible and all of us have our favorites (mine are never the books that sell the best, either, LOL). But I can’t express how sad it makes me to see people just phoning it in, or worse, encouraging others to just find stuff no one wants to toss it at an editor.

Remember – editors are gatekeepers to publishing for goodness sake! Do you want editor A to think you’re only capable of that half assed piece of crap you sent because someone on a loop urged you to? Do you want industry professionals, even those you don’t write for, to see you as a competent and professional person or one who digs out that questionable manuscript and lobs it at them just because?

If you’re going to do this – for god’s sake do it right. Put your best foot forward each and every time. That’s the point.

If it’s not the point, what the hell are you doing?

Here in Manchester the sun is setting on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, bringing this season of remembrance to a close. It will almost certainly be the last Armistice Day in which we have a living link to that first Armistice Day, to those on the front who heard the guns fall silent at the eleventh hour 91 years ago. Since last year's remembrance, the last handful of those living in the UK have gone. There are today but three still living verified veterans of the Great War around the world. The war to end all wars, which didn't.

Those men and women have seen more than one war since. Small wars, large wars. Wars which really were over within months, but more often wars which dragged on for years or decades. Monday saw the anniversary of two major turning points in two major conflicts which sprang from the unfinished business of the Great War. It was both the 71st anniversary of Kristallnacht and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Hate and hope on the same day, and perhaps that was not entirely a coincidence.

Lest we forget, for those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Thom's dad died last night. It truly was a mercy--the ALS had been whittling away at him bit by bit for the last two years. I'd never be able to deal with it the way he did. It's death by papercuts.

I didn't know him very well having only met him three times. He refused to come out of upstate NY, and we didn't have much time or money to travel. We did talk on the phone quite often and it saddens me to know I'll never hear his voice on the line asking "Is this Sir Fartsalot's castle?" again.

2009 can be over any time now...

Four days in Vegas. Two sexy and determined men. One penthouse suite… And No Reservations.

Christmas isn’t so merry for Kate and Leah. Kate’s romantic winter holiday is destroyed by the sudden and uninvited presence of Dix’s annoying ex-wife while Brandon’s super-perfect family and a diamond ring sends Leah running for the refuge of a girl’s holiday in Sin City with Kate in tow.

Dix and Brandon both know what they want. Hopping a plane in hot pursuit, the men show up in Vegas, ready to use every sensual trick they have to convince Kate and Leah to take a gamble on forever.

This is a follow up to last year’s Taking Care of Business and a continuation of the story between Leah and Brandon and Kate and Dix. Megan and I had a blast writing this book and I think it’s my favorite of the two just because I got to watch Kate and Dix grow stronger – oh and I laughed a lot when we wrote it.
